Als Musik der Romantik (Romantik von altfranzösisch romance ‚Dichtung‘, ‚Roman‘) bezeichnet man die vorherrschende Stilrichtung der Musik des 19. Jahrhunderts. Gewöhnlich werden drei Abschnitte unterschieden: Frühromantik, Hochromantik und Spätromantik. Die wichtigsten Eigenschaften der romantischen Musik sind die Betonung des gefühlvollen Ausdrucks, die Auflösung der klassischen Formen, die Erweiterung und schließlich Überschreitung der traditionellen Harmonik sowie die Verbindung der Musik mit außermusikalischen, häufig literarischen Ideen (Programmmusik).
Das Orchester wurde im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts ständig erweitert, um einerseits immer ausgefallenere koloristische Feinheiten zu erzielen, andererseits durch den Einsatz aller zur Verfügung stehenden Mittel immer überwältigendere Eindrücke zu ermöglichen. Außerdem wurden immer häufiger Elemente der Volksmusik aufgenommen, teils im Zuge des Realismus, teils bedingt durch die nationalen Schulen der kleineren Länder.
