L'homosexualité a été représentée au cinéma de façons très diverses suivant l'époque, le pays, le contexte culturel ou le regard personnel du réalisateur. Ce thème a été traité dans des comédies, dans le cinéma expérimental, dans des films historiques, policiers, biographiques, d'horreur, de contestation sociale ou de série B.
On distingue le cinéma à thème LGBT, dont l'intrigue tourne autour de personnages homosexuels et de leurs relations avec les autres, et les films faisant intervenir des personnages LGBT dans des rôles secondaires, dont la sexualité n'entre pas en compte dans la trame du film. La plupart des films de la première catégorie ont pour thèmes l'homosexualité et la bisexualité masculines, alors que le lesbianisme et la transidentité ont été moins souvent abordés.
