Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is een Amerikaanse speelfilm van Frank Capra uit 1939. James Stewart speelt in deze politieke tragikomedie de hoofdrol van Jefferson Smith, een jeugdige padvindersleider die de werkelijke wereld van de Amerikaanse politiek aan den lijve ondervindt als hij wordt aangesteld als senator.
Het scenario werd geschreven door Sidney Buchman, die de plot baseerde op een ongepubliceerd verhaal van Lewis R. Foster met de titel The Gentleman from Montana. Al bij zijn première veroorzaakte de film veel opschudding en werd onder andere afgeschilderd als anti-Amerikaans en procommunistisch. Desondanks werd Mr. Smith Goes to Washington een groot succes en betekende het de doorbraak voor James Stewart. De cast bevatte nog een groot aantal andere beroemde acteurs, zoals Claude Rains, Jean Arthur en Harry Carey. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington werd genomineerd voor elf Oscars en won een Oscar voor beste verhaal.
